Aghornath Chaterjee

Aghornath Chaterjee was born in 1850 at the village of Brammangaon, Lohajung upazila of Bikrampur, Munshiganj.

He was student of Presidency College, Calcutta. He went to England for higher studies with a scholarship "Gilcricht" and stood first class first in B.Sc (physics) from Edinbara University and he was awarded a special prize for his outstanding performance in physics. He also stood first at a competitive examination in chemistry and was conferred 'Hope' award.

In 1877 he was conferred DSc. He joined as reformer of education at the invitation of Nizam of Hyderabad, India. For his serious labour, education expanded in Hyderabad. He established Nizam College in that state. He used to study literature, poetry and wrote many poems and earned name and fame as a poet also. In his personal life he was philanthropist and used to help the poor people. He used to look after many poor youths. He lived in Calcutta at the end of his life. He had two sons and one daughter. Poet Herayndra Nath and Rebel Berendra Nath were his two sons. The reputed poet and political leader Shorojini Naidu was his daughter. It is to be mentioned here that the present Brahmman Gaon High School was established by him (Aghornath Chaterjee) in their own land. He died in 1915 on January 29.
