Anandachandra Mitra (1854-1903)

Anandachandra Mitra was born in 1854 in Bajroyogini village in Vikrampur. His father’s name was Bangachandra. After continuing a profession of teaching for a long period in Mymensingh, he served in a high rank of Calcutta Corporation. He was a prominent member of Brahma Samaj. He joined “Gupta Chakra”, the revolutionary party of Shibnath Shastri with Bipin Paul and Sundari Mohan Das and promised to offer his life for the cause of his country by signing the paper with his own blood. He kept his promise until death.

Anandachandra Mitra reserves a position amongst the writers of “Maha Kabbyos” (Great Poems) in between the eras of Madhusudan Dutta and Rabindranath Tagore. He wrote 11 of such “Maha kabbyos” of which, “Mitro Kabbyo” 1st (1874), 2nd (1877), “Helena Kabbyo 1 & 2” and “Bharat Mongol” brought him title as a poet.

Other than poetries he also wrote academic books both in the form of prose and poetry. He was also a composer of classical music. His song “Bharat shmashan majhe amire bidhoba” once became very popular. His poems “Poddosar”, “Poddo Shikkhasar”, “Kobitasar” was accepted largely by people.

Anandachandra Mitra wrote a satiric play titled “Kapale chhilo biye kandle hobe ki” in protest of Cooch Behar Marriage. He died in 1903.
