Hari
Anand Barari

Mr.
H.A. Barari, the author hails from a rural outback of what later
became Bangladesh. An alumnus of the famous Presidency College,
Kolkata, he earned many academic laurels and taught Economics at
a Kolkata College in 1952. He briefly switched over to a career
in the prestigiois Imperial Bank of India before finding his metier
in the Indian Police Service. He ended up as the country's topmost
police officer when he became the head of Intelligence Bureau (1984-1987)
in the aftermath of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira
gandhi. After retirement, he emerged out of the shadowy world of
intelligence to become the governor of Haryana (1988-1990). In
between, he had doubled as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh for
a brief while.
Very
recently he has written a book named "In Sun and Shower",
a pot-pourri of the author's distant memories, this book focuses
on his early life at his native place Vikrampur in pre-partition
East Bengal, now Bangladesh. The author showcases the pristine
glory of vikrampur, which in more recent times has been the home
of many illustrious sons of Bengal. Besides being a deep study
of the history and the cultural and spiritual traditions of that
place, the book also highlights some of the less known facets of
the local socio-cultural scene to make sure that these do not get
obliterated for ever from our collective memory. The authors disagreement
with some of the points made in the nobal laureate Amartya Sen
analysis of the Bengal Famine (1943) should attract notice in academic
circles
